Teachers Training Course for computer instructors of blind Spreading the computer literacy for blind across India

The teachers training course is being conducted for the teachers of different schools, NGOs & individuals who will provide computer training for visually impaired children & adults.

Need for the training

IT (and computers) for the blind is the biggest enabler for the educated blind. It has a deeper impact for the blind than for persons without disability. Computer education for the visually impaired enables them in their basic education, higher education, research, daily living and employment.

In today's environment with paper less offices and information available in the internet, computers represent freedom for the visually impaired and blind

There are very few schools and institutions offering computer training for blind More importantly there are very few trainers who teach computers and IT to the blind Also, there is no standardized formal curriculum. Hence quality IT education cannot be guaranteed. To address this gap, in 2005, Enable India started a teachers training course for master trainers who will teach computers to the blind.

The course provides training on JAWS, general teaching techniques and specific teaching techniques for the blind, industry orientation and usage of right resource aids. The trainers are equipped with a standard curriculum that they can follow at their respective institutions.

Some feedback about our course...

Prashant Naik, computer instructor for blind, XRCVC, Mumbai says:
"It was a great experience and we have learned a lot about teaching computers to VI. Shanti Raghavan and Vidya Rao were our trainers and learning from such experienced people from the field was worth it. They taught us special teaching techniques for VI, using tactile diagrams, VI rules for computer operating and exceptions, efficient ways of teaching fundamentals of windows and many other teaching related aspects. Lectures were not only brainstorming but very interactive and with real teaching experiences with students and of course I experienced how a totally blind person works when I had to do all the practicals with the monitor being off!"

A personal note from Shanti Raghavan, Founder and Managing Trustee, Enable India :

My sincere thanks to IBM for their support because of which we are able to conduct this course with very less financial burden on us and the participants. We are very passionate about this course because we believe computers represents "freedom" for the blind and only when we can spread such standardized training will we see a bright future for the blind in jobs, education and more...
